A wall that is drying: planning new plaster and decoration

After installing a solution for rising damp, it can be tempting to redecorate straight away. However, the condition of the wall and the building should guide the next steps. One timetable cannot reasonably suit every property and every finish.

Separate drying from repair

An ATE or ATG device does not itself repair damaged plaster or peeling paint. Restoring the finish is a separate task. Before scheduling it, have the surface assessed and explain the existing materials, previous repairs and any other known moisture sources.

Choose an appropriate finish

Ask the person carrying out the work which products suit the wall and its condition. Avoid selecting a coating solely for its appearance or an ‘anti-damp’ label. The wall construction and recommendations appropriate to the building need to be considered.

Plan without a fixed promise

Drying is gradual and depends on materials, ventilation and installation conditions, among other factors. Any period mentioned in documentation needs to be understood in context as an indication. Deal separately with leaks, water ingress and condensation, then organise the decorative work with people familiar with your building.

Repainting a drying wall: avoid hiding damaged finishes

Fresh paint may make a room look more uniform without addressing salt deposits or plaster that no longer adheres properly. Before choosing a finish, distinguish sound areas from loose material and select preparation compatible with the wall. An old stone wall and a recent blockwork wall do not automatically need the same treatment.

Prepare decoration at your own pace

Keep the references of proposed products and ask the coating manufacturer or decorator about application conditions. Avoid a fixed repainting date unrelated to the actual substrate. You can plan colours and obtain a quotation while the wall is drying, then decide when to proceed according to its condition. Continue using your ATE or ATG in accordance with its manual during that period.
